The day we have all waited for...

April 29 will be one day we will probably never forget! The 7 weeks that Luke spent in a splint and cast were the hardest 7 weeks of our lives! He became very dependent on Jayson and I that he wanted to be held all the time! But I don't blame him, just laying around gets old, but he became heavy real quick. By the last 2 weeks, he really got mobile by crawling and getting where he wanted to go, and would even pull up on the couch, but still wanted to be held and sit on our lap. By the last 2 weeks, we began counting down the days for that heavy cast to be GONE! So the day came and we were so excited, just praying that the xray would show a healed fracture and not any more time in a cast. So here we are waiting to be call back:

We go straight to the room where they cut off the cast. Luke starts crying right away and really started fussing when the saw started. As she cut the cast in pieces, and then finally preyed it open she was so shocked as to how clean it was inside the cast, and asked us how long he had the cast on. She was surprised when we told her 6 weeks. She said that many kids come in there at 3 weeks and their cast is so soiled in urine and feces. Well we did our best to keep it as clean as possible - I didn't want to have to put Luke under again for a silly cast. We did have many accidents and blow outs, but we wiped down what we could and they dried it with the blow dryer. Good thing they lined the entire cast in the inside with plastic, so it made it easier to wipe. The blow dryer actually became Luke's friend as we wanted it when his leg would itch inside the cast. I was scared to put anything down his leg to scratch, so I put the blow dryer on cold and would put it down his cast and he loved it. He would always ask for the blow dryer.

So back to the cast being removed.... The nurse told me that many kids when the cast comes off, they tend to move it as a reflection and they usually scream because the leg hadn't moved in so long. Well by this time he was done fussing, and sure enough, he straightened his leg out and didn't make a peep - Good thing for the Ibuprofen I gave him before the appointment. Next stop, was to get a xray taken of his leg.
So we were escorted to a room to wait for the doctor to come in a discuss the xray. As soon as she put the xray up, I noticed the same fracture line, and then she pointed out all the new bone growth that had formed and his leg was healed, but would still take time to heal the fracture line. It was just good to hear that the cast was gone for sure!
She told us that it could take anywhere from a week to a month before he starts walking again. Well after about a week and half, he started putting weight on it and holding onto things to support him as he walked to get where he needed. By Sunday this weekend, he was walking on his own but with a limp as he favored that one side. He was so excited to sit in his car seat on the way home from Katy, because he spent the last 6 weeks staring at the ceiling of the truck. He talked and told me everything he saw out the window and He couldn't wait to come home and ride his tractor!
