So we had our appointment to get Luke's cast on at 8:20, but had to be there 30 minutes earlier to take x-rays. While in the xray room, Jayson gets a phone call from the hospital that Luke should have had nothing to eat or drink after midnight. We were both confused by the phone call, because we were just getting Luke's leg wrapped with the cast, he wasn't suppose to have surgery. So we got called back with the nurse and he shows up the x-ray and shows that Luke had a spiral fracture to his femur, and the doctor would be in a few. So the PA walks in and looks at the xrays and then tells us that her and the Dr looked at the xrays from the ER room the night before and the doctor decided that Luke would have to go under to have the cast placed on him. Why hadn't anyone told us about this? We were shocked that Luke was going to have to go under. The PA told us that there was no way for them to place the cast on him being fully awake, that it would be too painful for him. So now the phone call is making since to us, but why didn't they call us the day before to tell us that? Luckily Luke only had a few sips of Gatorade and we were able to be added on to the days "surgery" So for the rest of the day, Luke could not have anything to eat or drink until after his "so-called surgery" which was not until 2:00. So we waited around all day for 2:00 to roll around. Luke was a pretty good sport about just waiting around, except for the million times we wanted juice. So we finally get in to pre-op and wait another hour before Luke is finally wheeled back to surgery. So in the meantime, we watched a movie to keeps us occupied and Luke dozed off for a little nap.
The doctor came to talk to us right before they wheeled him off explaining that she was not happy that the ER sent us home that day with just a splint. She explained to us that she had discussed this with her supervisor that the ER should have admitted us that same day to have the cast placed. So she asked to take a few pictures of Luke's leg to report back to her supervisor. Well after an hour surgery, we were called to recovery room, where we were there to watch Luke wake up. Finally about 6:30 p.m. we were finally discharged from the hospital to go home. Luke is now in what they call a "spica cast". It goes from his ankle up to and around his groin and then around his waist. He is not able to sit up, due to not bending at the waist. So he can no longer ride in a car seat for these next 6 weeks. He has what they call a EZ vest where he lays in the middle of the back seat and is strapped in.
He has pretty well spent the first two weeks riding around in the wagon, but now has figured out that he can roll around and army crawl to get where he needs to go. Overall, Luke has been in good spirits with his injury. We are just counting down the days to get it off on April 29.
While Luke had his splint on, we had been sleeping in our bed, but we decided it was time for him to sleep in his own bed with the cast on. He was still in a crib, and it was too hard for us to lift him over, so we converted his bed to a toddler bed and he thought we was hot stuff. Originally - he made him a deal that if he would go potty on the toilet, then we could have his big boy bed....Well it just came a little earlier. Now we will really have to work on potty training when the cast comes off!
